Abstract

The objective of the research was to determine the oviposition preference of the corn weevil (Sitophilus zeamais) in grains. To do this, we carried out an experiment with four treatments consisting of different types of cereals: corn, wheat, barley and rice. In each treatment, we infested 50 grams of grain with 50 adult insects, which we removed after two weeks. Then, we applied the fuchsine staining method and observed 50 random grains of each replicate and each cereal under a stereoscopic microscope to quantify egg laying and determine oviposition sites. The results indicated that the highest average number of eggs was observed in corn grains, followed by wheat, barley and rice grains respectively. Regarding the place of preference for egg laying, we observed that, in corn and barley grains, it was the flank or lateral part of the grain, while in wheat grains it was the front of the grain. On the other hand, in rice grains there was no oviposition site preference, due to the use of piled grain in the trial.
