Abstract

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) and loctao (Vigna radiata) are grain legumes that are agro-exportable in Peru and that perform biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) by associating with soil rhizobia. Inoculants formulated with selected rhizobia are used to increase their BNF capacity. The objective of this study was to investigate the number of viable rhizobia on the surface of cowpea and loctao seeds, when treated with six concentrations of liquid inoculant (25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 mL kg per seed) containing Bradyrhizobium yuanmingense RC-455-02. The cell count was higher in cowpea seeds (Log10= 6.79) and in loctao seeds (Log10=5.95), expressed as rhizobial cells per seed, using concentration of 50 and 30 mL kg per seed, respectively. A concentration of 30 mL of inoculant per kg to seed is recommended as the optimal concentration to obtain an adequate number of rhizobia and ensure adequate nodulation.
