Abstract

Anxiety is a natural adaptive response to stress that can negatively affect mental and physical health when prolonged. This study evaluated the level of anxiety in students at the National University of Barranca (UNAB). Using a non-experimental, descriptive and cross-sectional design, 309 students were randomly selected from a population of 1573 through probability sampling. The “Hamilton Anxiety Assessment Scale” was used for data collection, with validity and reliability of 0.05. The prevalence of anxiety among UNAB students was 86.1%, with mild anxiety being most common (52.1%), followed by severe (17.8%) and moderate (16.2%). Women showed a higher prevalence (92.4%) compared to men (78.4%). By major, Civil Engineering had the highest prevalence (95.2%), followed by Law and Political Science (94.2%). The predominant symptoms were anxious state and tension in the psychic area, while muscular symptoms were the most frequent in the somatic area. In conclusion, anxiety significantly affects the majority of UNAB students, being more prevalent in women and in specific careers such as Civil Engineering. This study highlights the need for interventions to mitigate the negative effects of anxiety on students’ well-being and academic performance.
